During his early career, Potter made numerous commercials, both appearing on-screen and as voice-overs, including a popular Nautilus ad. "When Chris did a commercial it played (a lot). It stayed on the air for a long time," Loucks remembers. He also made a number of guest appearances on both Canadian and syndicated series such as Night Watch, Top Cops, Katts and Dogs, The Hidden Room and Street Legal.

He was best known in his early career for his role for three seasons on the CBC-TV series, Material World. Regarding his character, a handsome, nice-guy neighbor of the lead who later becomes her boyfriend, Potter told the Toronto Sun TV Magazine, "The man was so passive and friendly it was unreal." After three years, Potter's character was written out of the series. "I slept with her (the main character) on the show. After that you either marry her or you're gone," Potter told interviewer Wayne Glidden. The series' producers chose to keep their lead single.

During a period in 1989-90, Potter went to Los Angeles, California on the advice of his agency, a process known in the industry as "shopping", but he soon returned to London. Returning home is common for Canadian actors who often grow homesick in the truly foreign land of Los Angeles. Chris, however, continued to act as the consummate professional doing whatever his career required. Loucks admits she's seen this with other Canadian actors. "It's happened with other clients. They always come home. They can stand it for a specific amount of time and then they come home." She goes on to add, "But with Chris, he does what he needs to do. If he's got to go down there (to L.A.), he's down there. He handles it like a business."
