By 1991, Potter was being hailed as "the Canadian Costner", had a lucrative contract for a national Wrigley's gum commercial and a 5-year contract with the CBC. The determination and optimism was taking him closer to his goal. He also had the confidence to turn down an offer from the Disney Channel for a part in a series filmed in Virginia, U.S.A. which would have disrupted his family life. "I made a commitment, my wife comes first," Potter told Schuman. "Also, it wasn't a quality role. It wasn't up my alley."

He had also been sought by producer Stephen J. Cannell to co-star in a new CBS series in pre-production called, The Hat Squad. Cannell took Potter to the network and said, according to Potter, "I want him. Unfortunately, CBS didn't want me." Another show was offered, but Potter declined because the commitment required moving his entire family to Hollywood. Potter also screen-tested for the lead in the film The Rocketeer. He ended up in Los Angeles once more in the final auditions for the lead of the soon-to-be syndicated series Forever Knight. The choice was between Chris Potter and one other guy, Geraint Wyn Davies. "We knew it was going to be one or the other of us," Potter explained. "The next day my agent called and said they'd decided to go with neither of us. A few weeks later, I heard they'd changed their minds again and decided to go with Geraint." It so happened that Davies was staying with a friend while in L.A., a producer named Michael Sloan. Sloan was in L.A. on pre-production for a new syndicated series, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.

"I was heading home. I had my bags packed, my plane ticket. When I got the call from my agent saying she had this script," Potter told a group of fans, "I told her I didn't want to even audition. She said just take a look at it." Potter did take a look at it and ended up at yet another final audition. This time reading with David Carradine, the series star.

Exhausted from the tension of the recent weeks, tired from packing and rearranging his schedule yet again, and fearing another disappointment, Potter simply stretched out on the floor and closed his eyes after his final reading with Carradine. He opened them to find Carradine standing over him. "Relax, kid," Carradine reportedly said. "You got the job."
