Sharing the bench with hockey greats such as Mario Lemieux or taking an unintentional hit from hockey legend Gordie Howe (known as Mr. Hockey) may not be Potter's childhood dream of becoming an NHL All-Star himself, however, most hockey enthusiasts would call it close enough. Particularly since Chris Potter has often surprised the professionals with his skill and determiniation. In a charity match against a lineup of retired Boston Bruin hockey stars, Potter caught the attention of Dave Shea, NESN-TV (New England Sports Network) sportscaster. During the NESN-TV airing of the game, Shea commented "Chris Potter's put on quite a show out there." Potter had executed a deft move around several Bruin defenders to let fly a pinpoint shot on goal forcing recent Boston retiree Reggie Lemelin to make a serious save. Moments later Shea cried, "Here comes Potter again!" This time Potter executed a perfect fake low, "dropping his left shoulder like a professional," to pull Lemelin out of position for Potter's goal shot over the goalie's shoulder. The segment became a game highlight with Shea commenting, "Reggie gave him a look as if to say, 'Wait a minute! I didn't know you guys could do that!'" Dan Moriarty, the color commentary added, "You're the celebrity team! Who can shoot a puck like that?" Potter's play was tagged with a final compliment, "Outstanding! Hey, I'm impressed!" Others have been impressed not only with Potter's play, but with his versatility on the ice. While center seems to be his prefered position, he's been equally effective as both a wing and defenseman. As a defenseman, he's known for following in the skates of hockey great Bobby Orr who played an "offense-style" defense. Potter rarely hangs back behind the blue line for long. Potter's sense of teamwork also makes him a popular line match for retired professional players who find him more than willing to sacrifice his own shot-on-goal in favor of setting up someone in better position and effectively screening the shot or catching the rebound. But most of all, Potter makes it clear he's having fun on the ice and loves the game.
