In 1996, the Celebrity All-Star Hockey Team tried a different surface and joined the NHL Breakout '96, which promotes ice hockey and inline (or roller) hockey. The Celebrity All-Star Team traded in their blades for wheels and performed a largely scripted game in Santa Monica, California for Comedy Central who aired the edited hijinks in December 1996. At this time, Chris Potter was shooting the USA Network TV series, Silk Stalkings, in nearby San Diego, California. He was also recovering from reconstructive knee surgery earlier in the year. Healing had been complicated by post-operative infection and subsequent treatment, limiting lateral movement and preventing full extension of the knee. In addition, Potter was outfitted with a camera sytem in his helmet, requiring him to skate with over twenty pounds of extra equipment. Still he won a comedy skating competition as well as scoring a goal and an assist before the coach told the team to stop scoring -- the script said they were suppose to lose!

In between hockey games, Chris Potter joined in several charity golf tournaments throughout 1995 and a "convention committee versus the guests" softball game. The guests included not only actors such as Potter and Bruce Boxleitner, but astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Appearing at the Magnum Opus Con itself was an Herculean effort on Potter's part. His third daughter had been born just three days prior and Potter had been forced to film until the wee hours of the morning to make up the lost shooting time. He then caught a delayed flight to Atlanta, Georgia, USA, arriving shortly before his first scheduled appearance, after which he signed autographs for over an hour, returned to his room to change, then headed to the softball game where his home run first time at bat gave the celebrities a commanding lead. Chris Potter's appearance at Magnum Opus Con, despite exhaustion and a desire to be with his family, demonstrated both the power of athletics to revitalize him, but also his comittment to his supporters and fans.
