Through Thick and Thin #23 (June 8, 2003) Exercise is Not an 'Option'; It's Now my 'Default'I reached a milestone this week, 7.5 months post-op – 125 pounds off. I'm somewhere between 20 and 50 pounds away from my goal weight. (I'll know what it is when I get there ) I feel and look great as I begin to approach the weight where my appearance might be considered normal. And as I prepare for a two week snorkeling and fishing adventure in Cuba and the Bahamas with my daughter, I'm both scared of the great Food Unknowns on my journeys, and thrilled with the way I've become a Walking Fool (as opposed to an Inert Fool).
As I sit at the computer to write, and change some options and defaults on my system, I realize that, for me, exercise is not longer an option, but my default. What I mean is that I am comfortably and naturally incorporating exercise into every day and everything I do. I walk for fun and for weight loss and because it's become a joyful way to center myself and recharge my emotional, professional and spiritual batteries. I can hardly wait to walk several miles a day in Old Havana and along the magnificent beaches, to swim and snorkel, and to learn how to move my hips when I salsa. This is so different and it's such a precious gift! And after a quick cross-country trip last week, I know that flying is no longer a dreadful and humiliating experience for me. At my reduced weight, I fit comfortably into even the narrow seats on a plane; I no longer need to embarrass myself by requesting a seat belt extender; and I can comfortably move in and out of my row and in and even out of those ridiculously tiny bathrooms. As I travel, I am reassured and comforted to know that between my protein shakes, Juice Plus, vitamins and water, I have everything I need to live another healthy day. I'm no longer held hostage by airline meals or airport restaurants. My post-op blessings and joy continue to multiply exponentially. I still have some serious concerns and problems, but my Gratitude Attitude helps me reframe and cope with them. Apparently my severe acid reflux caused some ulcers in my esophagus and reconstituted stomach pouch, and this has severely limited my eating choices and program. I'll see the doctor for an endoscopy after I return from my vacation, and, until then, I'll appreciate and celebrate the boost to my accelerated weight loss that has resulted from my present inability to handle so many normal foods. I welcome the tradeoff: exchanging health for gluttony is serving me well. And I'm doing fine with an extremely boring and limited menu. My best wishes for a wonderful and healthful start of summer for you and yours... GlennClick here to read another newsletter.
